The Marshfield School District is asking residents to approve their $99.5 million referendum on the April 4th ballot.

In recent years, they have pre-paid the 2005 referendum debt that funded previous facility updates. At a recent School Board meeting, the Board approved paying off that debt early.

Because of this, the District has an opportunity to invest in their facilities with no increase over the current school tax rate for referendum debt. Marshfield’s mill rate currently sits at $7.79 per $1,000 of property value. There are several reasons behind the need for the referendum. For the elementary schools:

  • Some pick-up and drop-off areas are congested creating unsafe conditions;
  • Some roof sections need to be replaced;
  • Worn and aging windows need to be replaced;
  • Some areas of the elementary are not air conditioned;
  • And Grant Elementary’s main office needs to be relocated to improve security.

For the middle school:

  • Much of the plumbing system is original and needs to be replaced;
  • Interior portions of the building are worn and aging;
  • And light fixtures in portions of the building are old and inefficient.

For the high school:

  • HVAC systems are aging and need to be replaced;
  • Some parts of the electrical system are over 50 years old and need to be replaced;
  • Worn and aging windows need to be replaced;
  • The cafeteria is too small;
  • The school lacks flexible areas for both large and small group instruction;
  • Career and tech ed classes are too small to accommodate all the students interested in those programs;
  • The science, electronics, engineering, and robotics classrooms are too small;
  • And pick-up and drop-off and parking areas need to be reconfigured to better separate vehicles and pedestrians and decrease congestion.

The current plan, should the referendum pass, would address these needs by replacing windows, relocating and updating classrooms, adding more space, expanding parking areas, etc. To learn more, please visit: https://www.marshfieldschools.org/referendum.
