Suring School District Active Shooter Training March 20th

The March regular meeting of the Suring School Board was held on March 8, at 5:30 pm in room #300. In action items, the Board approved the Feb. 8, and March 1, meeting minutes and the financial, lunch and transportation reports. The Board approved the bus hourly charter rate, the transportation contract with Lamers, the CESA 8 service contract and the audit proposal. The addition of new courses were also approved.

During Public input visitors spoke to the topic of dual sports and the pros and cons for student athletes.

The District Spotlight featured Dorothy Buelow Putz, Upward Bound advisor who presented highlights from the Upward Bound program which is a federally funded pre-college program for academically talented students who have barriers to college completion. Celena Williams, K-12 Art teacher presented a slide show with various projects her students are working on. Williams talked about the Art Show that is set up at the Public Library for the public to view until March 24. She also reported on the different activities her classes are working on that include Ceramics 2 students working on the wheel, Kindergarten following the butterfly migration and second grade looking forward to a visit from bee keepers this spring.

Principal Kessler reported the extra elementary supports in place have been effective. He also reported Literacy Night and the Book Fair went well and all classes in the elementary achieved their reading goal for the month of February. Kessler stated the Middle School Science Fair is coming up and all Juniors completed the ACT test on March 7.

Athletic Director Heidi Gerndt reported spring sports have officially begun. High school track started this week and softball and baseball start soon. She also stated All-Conference Honors are posted and congratulations were extended to basketball players Ethan Lally and Christine Sleeter who received 2nd team All-Conference Honors and Mackenzie Bailey who received Honorable Mention. Keegan Rattin received Honorable Mention in wrestling. Parker Zahn and Shylah Hisey participated in the girls’ state wrestling tournament.

Dr. Orlich reported there will be an active shooter training on March 20 in the library. He also reported an onsite daycare is being considered to meet the community’s needs.

The next Regular Board Meeting will be on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 in Board Room #300 at 5:30PM.
