Suring School Board Airs COVID Policy Changes

At its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, Suring School Board discussed nursing services, a school Resource Officer and removing close contact quarantine requirements from the school’s COVID policy.
In action items, the Board approved the October 12 meeting minutes  and October’s financial reports and bills. In addition, the Board approved school nurse hours and a school resource officer Memorandum of Understanding with Oconto County contingent upon stated changes.
Director of Special Education/Curriculum Coordinator Mrs. Michelle Pendl reported that 20% of the District’s student population receives Special Ed Services, which is consistent with prior years’ percentages. She also explained that the “Spot  Zone” is a new classroom where students can go to self-regulate themselves. The number of student visits in October was down 50% from September.
Principal Zachara Beeksma reported that the 5th graders were able to go to Camp U-nah-li-yah for their annual trip and that Kristina Brighum, high school counselor has been taking junior and senior classes on several college trips, including UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Green Bay and will be going to Northern Michigan University in January.
Superintendent Dr. Paul Orlich shared with the Board that he has been working on the administrative transition and has been re-assigning some roles. He also informed the board that interviews of candidates for principal were to be held during the week of November 14.
The board also discussed compensation for van drivers and school board goals.
