LIVE OUTSIDE BRADLEY TECH NEAR 4TH AND PIERCE. GABBY, BESIDES PENCILS AND NOTEBOOKS, STUDENTS WILL ALSO HAVE TO BRING THEIR MASKS TODAY. REPORTER: YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT. STUDENTS AND STAFF WITH M.P.S. WILL HAVE TO BE WEARING A MASK WHEN THEY ENTER THOSE DOORS TODAY. WE'RE OUTSIDE OF BRADLEY TECH HERE. IN JUST A FEW HOURS, STUDENTS ARE GOING TO BE MAKING THEIR BAY THROUGH THESE DOORS WEARING THE MASK. ACCORDING TO M.P.S.'S WEBSITE, MASKS ARE NOW BEING REQUIRED THROUGH AT LEAST AUGUST 18. THAT'S BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT HIGH COMMUNITY SPREAD OF COVID IN MILWAUKEE. THAT INCLUDES ALL M.P.S. SCHOOLS ON AN EARLY START CALENDAR, WHICH ARE ALL HIGH SCHOOLS, MIDDLE SCHOOLS, K-12 SCHOOLS, AND SEVEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. 12 NEWS STEPPED INTO THE CLASSROOMS AS THEY PREPPED FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR. >> AS WE WATCH COVID TRANSITION AND CHANGE, WE'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE DISTRICT'S GUIDELINES, AS WELL AS THE MILWAUKEE HEALTH DEPARTMENT. WE REALLY UTILIZE EVERY MINUTE OF THIS TIME TO JUST PREPARE AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE WHEN KIDS RETURN. DIANA: A BIG QUESTION THIS MORNING, HOW LONG THOSE MASKS WILL BE MADE MANDATORY FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF. REPORTER: THE NEW COVID DATA WILL COME OUT LATER THIS WEEK ON THURSDAY. M.P.S. WILL THEN EVALUATE IT. MASKS WILL BECOME OPTIONAL ONCE THE COMMUNITY TRANSMISSION LEVEL REACHES A LOW OR MEDIUM THRESHOLD. RIGHT NOW WE'RE AT HIGH. All schools on the early start calendar require that staff and students wear a face mask

Milwaukee Public Schools determined that all staff and students on the early start calendar are required to use a face mask until Aug. 18. This decision goes in accordance with a recent announcement from MPS stating that they will follow the COVID-19 community levels tool on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website to determine whether or not masks are required in schools. "As we've watched COVID kind of transition and change, we've just been following the district's guidelines as well as the Milwaukee Health Department," said Aaron Shapiro, Bradley Tech High School Principal.MPS will re-evaluate the mask mandate on Thursday when new COVID-19 data will be available. Masks could be made optional if COVID-19 community transmission levels drop to a low or medium category.

Milwaukee Public Schools determined that all staff and students on the early start calendar are required to use a face mask until Aug. 18.
