GREEN BAY – The Green Bay School Board is seeking a headhunting firm to find the next superintendent, hoping to hire a consultant committed to diversity and who has experience finding a school administrator who stayed for over three years.

In a meeting Monday night, the board unanimously agreed to issue a request for proposals from companies on how they would search to replace former Superintendent Stephen Murley.

Murley resigned in April, citing health reasons, and the board appointed the deputy superintendent, Vicki Bayer, to temporarily replace him. Bayer is expected to continue in the interim role for the coming school year while the superintendent search continues.

Murley held the position for about a year and a half after his predecessor, Michelle Langenfeld, held the job for nine years. Murley has since accepted a job as an instructor at the University of Iowa's College of Education.

The district plans to send the proposal request to potential consulting firms Wednesday and included a scorecard with criteria for how a firm will be chosen.

A committee will review the proposals submitted based on each company's:

  • Cost of services
  • Experience in successfully finding superintendents for districts similar to Green Bay
  • Track record of placing superintendents who stay for more than three years
  • Commitment to finding candidates who are women or people of color
  • Availability of consultants in the Midwest
  • References: Three must be from districts where a candidate was successfully found, and one must be from a district where the search didn't go as planned.

Each criteria has a different amount of points that can be awarded with the most weight given to the track record of finding superintendents and finding people who remain more than three years.

The companies with the highest ratings on the scorecard will present their proposals by Aug. 10 on how they will conduct the search to the board. Presentations are tentatively scheduled for Sept. 26.

The board will select a company by Oct. 10 and will approve a contract by Oct. 24.

Officially, the chosen company will start the search for a new superintendent Nov. 1 with the goal of finding a candidate to start July 1, 2023.
