MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A Madison science teacher received the highest honor in Wisconsin education Tuesday.

Brian Counselman, who works at MMSD’S Malcom Shabazz City High School, was named the first of five Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s 2025 Teacher of the Year.

Counselman was honored with the award during a surprise assembly.

Officials say he has taught science and experimental education at the school for the past seven years.

He says as a teacher he tells his students it’s always important to be curious.

“Think if people kind of come at life with that curiosity they kind of dig in and like hey why do you exist that way,” said Counselman. “Why does this exist in this way. Just kind of connecting those dots. It brings people together. It brings ideas together. Ties into science but life is a lot more than just science.”

Counselman is also the school’s project-based Learning Coordinator which helps to create lessons for students to improve themselves and their communities.

Congrats Brian!
