Augusta High School held their first annual Educator’s Signing Day.

This special event took place on April 22 and was attended by 5 seniors who plan to pursue a career in education. The Signing Day was sponsored by the Augusta Chapter of Educators Rising, with Mrs. Ashley King as the advisor.

This program is designed to encourage students to embrace the calling of teaching as a profession, get hands-on teaching experience in the classroom, even before college, and be recognized as a student leader advocating for education.

By developing and preparing teachers for the future, Educators Rising is working towards breaking the cycle of teachers feeling unprepared and unsupported when they enter the workforce leading to 33% of new teachers leaving the profession within their first three years of teaching.

By supporting and encouraging students who plan to go into this challenging, yet rewarding, profession, Educators Rising is helping to raise-up prepared and motivated teachers.

The Signing Day was a time for these five seniors to celebrate the choice and commitment to enter into the teaching field. Over 30 family members and educational staff, including Mr. Ryan Nelson, superintendent of the Augusta School District, Mr. Reed Pecha, principal of Augusta Middle/High School and Mrs. Nicole Stienmetz, principal of Augusta Elementary School, was there to celebrate the commitment made by these students.

In return for their commitment, the Augusta School District made the commitment that they would guarantee an interview to these students once they have met the educational and licensing requirements of the job they are applying for.

Almost 60% of teachers work within 20 miles of their high school. By nurturing and cultivating their own educators, Augusta is working to ensure they have dedicated professionals who understand and are committed to their community’s needs.

The seniors who participated in the Signing Day are:

  • Montana Grimm,
  • Melanie Ives,
  • Aryona Gunter,
  • Abigail Boone,
  • And Nevaeh Bergman.

Montana plans to attend CVTC, Melanie Ives and Aryona plan to attend UW-Stout, Nevaeh will attend UW-Eau Claire and Abigail will be attending UW-Stevens point. The signing of the contract marked a step in the journey of becoming a future educator knowing that they are supported and encouraged.
