JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - A Janesville elementary school is now the recipient of the National Blue Ribbon award.

WMTV 15 News had the opportunity to sit down with Monroe Elementary School Principal Sally Pope on what the award means for the community.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a U.S. Department of Education award program that honors public and non-public schools for their exemplary high performances.

“We are one of eight schools, only eight schools in the state of Wisconsin, that were recognized as a National Blue Ribbon school,” said Pope. “And one of only 353 in the entire nation.”

According to Pope, Monroe students that took the mandated state test scored in the 10-15% top tier in Wisconsin. She could not be any more proud.

“Within three years, we went from meeting few expectations to a National Blue Ribbon status,” said Pope. “From few to blue, they’ve put in all the hard work every day, even when it is hard work.”

In November, Pope and other school officials were able to travel to Washington D.C. to accept the honor in person.

Darlington Elementary and Middle School also received the National Blue Ribbon recognition as well.
