EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski gave Northwoods Elementary students a story today while also giving the Eau Claire Area School District a $800,000 grant.

The grant is part of a $65 million distribution state-wide from the Common School Fund.

Godlewski said it is a record-breaking amount for the state.

That grant money will go towards keeping the Eau Claire Area School District up-to-date with current learning materials.

Godlewski, an Eau Claire native, is in the area as part of a campaign to teach students about civics and the role of the Secretary of State in Wisconsin.

“We’ve got to meet kids where they are, we’ve got to show up in communities. So that’s part of what we’re doing with this youth initiative. It’s critical to our democracy, if they start learning about why their voice matters today, they’re more likely to engage in the future,” Godlewski said.

Godlewski also visited her alma mater, Memorial High School, to give a speech and held a roundtable with students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
