RFSD honored nationally for 4th consecutive year for music education support

RIVER FALLS - The School District of River Falls (SDRF) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 25th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

“I’m proud of our students and staff and the investment that our community makes for our students. We have a quality music education program, including two outstanding musicals a year, choral and instrumental ensembles and concerts, a state champion marching band, and more,” said Superintendent Jamie Benson. “This year, we have an unprecedented number of solo and ensemble musicians heading to the state competition. This award is symbolic of the commitment our community has made to our students and the dedication of our music educators to bring quality musical opportunities to our students.”

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, SDRF answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Meyer Middle School music teacher Jacy Walker spearheaded the application process.

“Music education is a unique place where students come together in a truly collaborative space and be a part of something bigger than themselves individually,” said Walker. “As music educators, we’re committed to creativity, fostering a growth mindset, and helping our students gain an appreciation of music by providing hands-on, student-centered experiences.”

This is the fourth year in a row the district has received the honor.
