WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Today, Wausau East High School was presented with a check for $1,500 to pay off student lunch debt as part of an effort by a Wausau pastor and parent.

Between the Wausau and D.C. Everest School Districts, there’s about $20,000 in school lunch debt.

More than 500 families struggle to pay for school lunches. In honor of Pay It Forward month, Pastor at Cross Church Yauo Yang set up a GoFundMe to raise at least $20,000 to erase the lunch debt.

“I’m just really flabbergasted and overjoyed by the generosity of the community,” Yang said. “To be able to help out students in our districts and their families that sometimes just struggle to feed their kids.”

The grand total from the GoFundMe is now over $26,000 — surpassing the goal.
