GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Community members gathered Thursday to support an organization that's making a difference for students in need.

Good Day Wisconsin's Pete Petoniak served as the emcee for the "Taste of the Villages and Auction" held at the Rock Garden. The event benefits "The Giving Tree" of the Howard-Suamico School District.

It's a school-based program that focuses on making food, shelter, transportation and other resources accessible to all students and families within the district.

Along with a food pantry, the organization gives away filled backpacks at the start of the school year, pays for kids to participate in extra-curricular activities, and provides personal care items, school supplies and holiday assistance.

The goal is to close opportunity gaps children might encounter during their 4K-12 years at Howard-Suamico School District.
