MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Madison Metropolitan School District announced Tuesday that it will restart the naming process of Southside Elementary School.

Officials say name selection started in the winter, but it was paused because of superintendent transitions.

The school opened its doors with the temporary Southside moniker last August.

The District says the plan was that naming efforts would resume, and a permanent replacement would be selected.

Southside Elementary isn’t the only school to undergo name changes in the Madison district in recent years. The MMSD School Board voted unanimously in 2021 to adopt the name change of James Madison Memorial High School to Vel Phillips Memorial High School. The Board also voted in 2023 to change Thomas Jefferson Middle School to Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School.
