LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) -- Nearly 200 5th and 6th graders enrolled in the Mississippi Valley Gifted & Talented Network took part in a Kids' College event at UW-La Crosse.
Encompassing three sessions throughout the day, students could register to take up to three different classes ranging in subjects like Archaeology, Chemistry, Astronomy or activities like making Japanese Two-Way Button Designs, ascending the UWL Climbing Wall, or Banging on the UWL Marching Band drums.Â
Dean Witz, a Gifted & Talented Network Coordinator in the Blair-Taylor District, said the event exposes the middle schoolers to the college experience.
"We hope it gives them an idea of what it's like to be on a college campus and what it's like to go to school at a different level," Dean Witz said.
"Right now these kids are all fifth and sixth grade and so they have their classes pretty well scheduled for them," Witz continued. "Everything's programmed for them. Whereas when you get to the college level you get to actually make choices about what you want to do and what you want to study."
Both University of Wisconsin La Crosse and the Mississippi Valley Gifted & Talented Network co-sponsored the event.
