The La Crosse school board is set to consider Monday whether it will place a $53 million school facilities referendum on November ballots.
Last month, the La Crosse school board voted 7-2 to consolidate Emerson and Spence elementary schools in a new building and close Hintgen Elementary School while adding on to State Road Elementary.
At Monday’s board meeting, they are set to decide between one of two referendum measures that will put a $53 million building referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Both proposals call for $53 million to pay for the cost of a school building project and facility improvement project, including the construction of a new elementary school to accommodate the consolidation of Emerson and Spence schools; the removal of the current Hogan Administrative Building; construction of additions, including for classrooms and a gymnasium at State Road Elementary School; and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment.

The second referendum option includes identical language to the first, but spells out that Hintgen Elementary School would be consolidated into the remodeled State Road Elementary School. Both options carry the same price tag.
The cost of the new elementary school is estimated at $42 million, and the State Road addition is estimated to cost $11 million.
Newly elected board members Tim Alberts, Adam Manka and Jim Bagniewski are set to take their seats at the Board Reorganizational Meeting on April 22.
