Superintendent Stephen Plank, of the Burlington Area School District, will resign from his leadership post at the end of the school year.
According to a news release from the district, Plank submitted his letter of resignation to the School Board on May 18, informing officials his last date will be on June 30, adding he has accepted a position as principal at Wauwatosa East High School.
“I find it incredibly difficult to articulate my appreciation for the opportunity to serve with each of you on behalf of the students and families, and the greater Burlington Area,” Plank wrote in a letter to all district staff members on May 19, one day after tendered in his resignation.
“I believe strongly in what we have collectively done, decided and accomplished on behalf of our students. Those students are why we show up each and every day.”
On Monday, the School Board began discussions on how to fill the vacancy caused by Plank’s resignation.
In the coming weeks, the Board will continue ongoing discussions, according to a district news release.
Plank, meanwhile, served as superintendent for four years and succeeded long-time administrator Peter Smet.
“Being trusted to sit in this seat over the course of the last four years as the district has matured, has been an incredible privilege,” Plank wrote in a letter to staff. “During a remarkably challenging and uncertain time, we collaborated to do what was best for us, with, and on behalf of our students and community. The work, decisions and criticisms have been humbling.”
During Plank’s tenure as superintendent, he implemented 2018 capital referendum projects, including the opening of Karcher Middle School, and redrawing attendance boundaries.
In his first year as superintendent, Plank guided the district through the COVID-19 pandemic.
