WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Parents and protestors lined the street outside of the Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools building for hours Monday. They were calling for a change to the district’s mandatory mask policies.
“We are trying to get them at least for the summer to say hey, let’s try out no masks,” organizer Becky Kressin told WAOW-TV.
The district voted in May to continue its mask policy through summer school, a decision that drew anger from some parents.
“A lot of times schools aren’t air-conditioned depending on what town and it’s just, it’s not fair to these little kids to do it,” Kressin said.
Monday, the group converged on the school board’s meeting, asking for an optional mask policy to give students and families the right to choose.
For the district’s part, officials say they understand where parents are coming from. “I understand that people are tired of it… I get all that,” said superintendent Craig Broeren.
They say they’re going to stick with the advice of health officials when it comes to making decisions. “We’ll make modifications and changes have as we have this entire school year as we see appropriate,” Broeren said.
That change could come soon. Broeren said officials are planning to meet with health officials to discuss modifications to mask rules. Those discussions will be held in July.
