GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -The Green Bay School District is preparing for one of its largest summer school programs, ever. Part of the reason for the expansion is to help struggling students, after a year of virtual learning.
While time is ticking for dismissal bells to ring one last time at Green Bay Schools this year, Jamie Jensen tells FOX 11 she is figuring out how her son will be spending his summer.
“It is our desire for him to take intensive summer school. Hopefully that will be something offered five days a week.”
While Jensen is looking into private school options for next year first, she said summer school may be a second option after a year of almost all virtual learning for her son.
“He struggles to engage that way. It’s not the way he learns. It’s just different.”
Jensen’s family is likely not the only one in the District considering summer school.
“We are anticipating that we will see an increase in summer programming this summer, yes,” said Lisa Johnson, the coordinator for enrichment and summer programs at Green Bay Schools.
Johnson tells FOX 11 the district will be expanding availability for its core classes, as well as its extracurriculars this year.
“Some of our elective courses, the reality is it’s hard to do hands-on type of courses when we were virtual, so kids didn’t get the same experiences, so we anticipate we’ll have more opportunities in the summer.”
District data shows students struggled with virtual learning. At the end of last semester, 27% of grades reported for Green Bay middle and high schoolers were Fs.
“Some kids did really well with virtual. Others didn’t,” said Johnson. “It depends on your learning style, and for those kids that need more in-person, this is something to do: summer programming.”
Johnson says this is the perfect opportunity for students to stay on track with their learning.
“From a grading standpoint, the secondary level is absolutely an opportunity for high school kids. If they struggled with one of those courses during virtual, this can help support and finish that learning this summer so they’re still on track for graduation.”
Registration opens Monday for summer school. Classes for the first session begin on June 14th.
