CITY OF MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Public Schools has suspended all high school winter sports indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MPS Commissioner of Athletics, Bobbie N. Kelsey, wrote to families Wednesday that high school winter sports are postponed - including boys and girls basketball, boys swimming, wrestling and diving.

The school district had already suspended fall sports amid the surging pandemic.

The decision comes as Wisconsin continues to break records in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, and as Gov. Tony Evers announces he will extend the statewide mask mandate.

"Please know this was an extremely difficult decision made with safety as our guiding principle," Kelsey wrote in the letter to families.
