Several school boards across our area met for scheduled meetings Monday evening, and each of them gave updates on how the school year is going so far during the pandemic.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported a nearly 22% COVID-19 case positivity rate Monday.

The Wauwatosa School Board voted to recommend the district stay in the current hybrid model of learning at least until Dec. 1. Administrators said they are keeping a close eye on metrics, and said they don't want to have to go to all virtual if they go completely in-person too soon.

Some parents said they weren't happy with the current hybrid model, but a fair amount of others said they support keeping it.

"I like that we are in smaller cohorts so that our risk of exposure is lower," one parent said.

The West Allis-West Milwaukee School Board met to discuss how they are meeting with each school to see how they can prepare for when students may return.

In Racine, school board members implored the community to practice safe social distancing so that they could reopen schools to in-person learning.

At least a dozen people appeared to have attended the meeting in person, including a few parents who expressed their frustration with virtual learning.

"Every morning, my wife and I have to sit at a desk and watch a video he’s not engaged with," a parent of a 4K student said. "We’ve taken the emotional interaction away from our children."

Online agendas show the Greenfield School Board met Monday to discuss a potential timeline for returning to in-person classes.

During a Whitnall School Board meeting, an administrator said close to 20 percent of students chose distance learning, while about 80 percent chose in-person.

The Menomonee Falls Board of Education met Monday after the superintendent announced Friday some of its students could return to five-day in-person classroom learning starting next month.
