ASHWAUBENON – Parkview Middle School Associate Principal Brian Carter participated in the Ashwaubenon school board meeting via teleconference Wednesday, March 18, when he received formal approval to be the next principal of Cormier School and Early Learning Center.

The Ashwaubenon School District has closed its schools to students through at least April 24 and will be utilizing online instruction starting March 30 after spring break.

It also put precautions in place for the meeting to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

With social distancing of 6 feet for those in attendance, which was limited to 10 people, some staff and one board member participated in the meeting remotely.

Carter will begin as Cormier’s principal July 1.

He will replace Maria Arena, who is retiring after 23 years.

Carter said he is excited about being approved for the position.

“I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully we get back to school soon,” he said.

Carter, who has been the associate principal at Parkview for the past six years, began his 18-year educational career as a physical education and health teacher at Westside Academy in Milwaukee and then at J.R. Gerritts Middle School in Kimberly.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science and health education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Viterbo University.

With Carter becoming Cormier’s principal, Superintendent Kurt Weyers said the district will be looking for an associate principal at Parkview to be able to fill the position before July 1.

Retirements

Board members also approved three retirement requests effective the end of the 2019-20 school year.

They include: Jay Marcks, a full-time fifth-grade instructor at Pioneer Elementary School with 20 years of service; Eileen Flinchum, a full-time clerk at Parkview Middle School with 23 years of service; and Steven Beining, a custodian at Valley View Elementary School with 30 years of service.

Early College Credit

The board authorized Early College Credit requests for 38 students next fall.

Ashwaubenon High School Principal Dirk Ribbens said the majority of those students will be enrolling in NWTC’s nursing assistant program held near the high school at Woodside Senior Communities.
