MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee leaders, parents and teachers came together on Monday, February 24 to show their support for an upcoming referendum that would benefit Milwaukee Public Schools.
Supporters held a press conference to kick off Public Schools Week and explain why MPS needs more support from the community.
The referendum would help make sure classrooms have enough basic materials, would allow for full-time librarians and would increase support services for mental health.
Supporters say if passed, it would cost the average Milwaukee homeowner around $4 extra per week. They say it is a modest cost to help students.
“It is a no-brainer," Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association President Amy Mizialko said. "It is the simplest thing that you can do on April 7, to vote yes for MPS students for their support and success now and for the future success of this city and community."
The referendum will be voted on during the April 7 election.
