Online Courses
Online Courses are typically between four to eight weeks long. They offer each student a chance to engage deeply with subject material over an extended period of time. Keep on track with regular video chats and other interactions with accessible faculty, and discuss the course material with classmates in online forums.
Introduction to Financial Management (Summer 2024) - Online Course
May 20 - June 21, 2024| Introduction to Financial Management is an AASLH online course. This four-week course, taught by instructor Rebekah Beaulieu, provides an introduction to financial concepts, from understanding expenses and income to how to establish an endowment. Successful completion of this course will earn one credit toward the Small Museum Pro! certificate from AASLH.
Developing Exhibitions: Planning & Design (Summer 2024) - Online Course
May 20 - July 14, 2024 | Developing Exhibitions: Developing Exhibits: Planning & Design is an AASLH online course. This eight-week course, taught by instructor Jenney Fazande, will introduce participants to the process of designing an exhibit. Successful completion of this course will earn one credit toward the Small Museum Pro! certificate from AASLH.
Caring for Museum Collections (Summer 2024) - Online Course
May 20 - July 14, 2024 | Caring for Museum Collections is an AASLH online course. This eight-week practical course, taught by instructor Rebecca Elder, deals with the physical care and preservation of museum collections. Successful completion of this course will earn one credit toward the Small Museum Pro! certificate from AASLH.
Onsite and Virtual Workshops
Workshops are one to two day in-person or virtual training events. We offer several workshops every year in various locations around the country as well as online. Each workshop offers participants a chance to engage in intensive learning and discussion with faculty and classmates.
Interpreting Enslavement in School Programs at the 250th (May 2024) - Virtual Workshop

The upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding is an opportunity for museums and historic sites with stories of slavery to create programs that explore our collective history. School programs that include the history of enslaved Africans acknowledge that their stories are essential to the country’s narrative – past and present. The workshop will discuss pedagogically-sound and emotionally-aware techniques for developing school programs and strategies for training/caring for staff. When a museum or historic site commits to doing school programs on the topic of enslavement, they are acknowledging an inclusive story of American history, and the legacies of slavery that exist in our society today. By engaging students in dialogue about slavery, they bring their prior knowledge, scaffold new knowledge, and create their own relevance – all while adults hear them and show respect for what they have to say.
This two-day workshop will nurture the following skills:
· developing pedagogically-sound and emotionally-aware school programs on the subjects slavery and race, with a focus on the 250th anniversary,
· contextualizing the topic of enslavement, eliminating mythological stories, and facilitating culturally-sensitive discussions, and
· helping students make relevant connections between past and present.
Workshop: Collections Camp: Textiles (June 2024)
