How to Build Your Own Successful Traveling Trunk Program: Thinking Inside the Box to Reach Classrooms Outside Your Area

Part of the role of museum educators is to connect historic resources with teachers so that they can better engage the curriculum. One of the best ways to do that is by producing a traveling trunk program. While the world has gone digital over the last decade, there remains value, even opportunity, in the tactile learning experience. In 2011, the Tennessee State Museum overhauled its old, outdated trunk program into an engaging, standards-based, and hands-on program that serves over 30,000 students a year with 62 trunks distributed to counties throughout the state.

In this webinar, we will discuss step by step with you how you can create a traveling trunk program from the ground up. How to develop lesson plans. How to choose topics. Show the difference between a trunk lesson and a web-based lesson. Offer ideas about shipping. Discuss what happens when things come back broken or missing. And even, what happens when the trunk doesn’t come back at all! In ten years of running their traveling trunk program, the Tennessee State Museum team has seen it all and they've learned many lessons. This webinar will help you build an outreach program that can have a greater impact beyond your museum or historic site.

This webinar is part of the StEPs Lab series of online continuing education offered to both StEPs program participants and all others interested in the topic of museum education. This is StEPs Lab 21.

Director of Education and Community Engagement, Tennessee State Museum

Jeff Sellers is the Director of Education and Community Engagement at the Tennessee State Museum. Throughout his 18 year career in museum education, Jeff and his team have conducted countless teacher professional development workshops, exhibit-based programming, and interpretive tours at both the museum and Tennessee State Capitol. He has worked closely with the Tennessee Department of Education on both the standards review process and textbook adoption committees. Currently, he serves on the programming committee for AASLH and as a board member for the Tennessee Council for the Social Studies. He lives with his wife and two kids in Nashville, TN.
