Course Description
During this workshop, deepen your understanding of the LGBTQ+ community and how to be an effective, authentic ally to people of all genders and identities. Core topics include inclusive language, practices of authentic allies, creating inclusive workplaces, and an introduction to incorporating queer history in to your organizations.
Details
COST: $65 AASLH Members / $90 Nonmembers
FORMAT: Online self-paced course, expected to be done over 6 weeks approximately 5-7 hours of work per week
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Deepen understanding of foundational principles of gender and sexuality theory, inclusive language, and trans/non-conforming identities
Review the elements of authentic allyship for LGBTQ+ colleagues, including those who are questioning or coming out, and develop personal allyship plans for the LGBTQ+ community
Discuss relevant workplace policies, visitor guidelines, and interpretation planning to support LGBTQ+ staff and visitors, and construct an organizational LGBTQ+ inclusion plan
Develop an understanding of how sexual identity and gender identity combine with other dimensions of diversity and identity to shape the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals
Understand and implement strategies for uncovering queer history and interpreting queer history, including considerations for intersectional identities and evolving norms, traditions, and language over time
Ali Kane (she/they)
Ali Kane (she/they) a Queer nonprofit leader and lifelong learner committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and accessible world for individuals with diverse identities and experiences. Through ALK Consulting, Ali offers LGBTQ+ inclusion workshops to create more affirming spaces for Queer folx to work and live.
Ali’s work is centered in encouraging compassionate curiosity and building relationships grounded in understanding and trust. This has manifested in founding the LGBTQ+ Museum Staff & Students affinity group with Sam Dinnie, (hosted by the New England Museum Association) which fills a critical need in building queer community among museum professionals globally. Ali is Treasurer of Love Your Labels, an organization that explores identity and expression with LGBTQ+ youth through art, fashion, and design. They also advocate for disability inclusion as an Institutional Giving Officer at Perkins School for the Blind
Ali was appointed to the American Public Garden Associations Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee from 2017-20, and founded the IDEA Committee at New England Botanic Garden. They hold a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Diversity & Inclusion Champion Certificate from the Bentley University Center for Women & Business.
Aside from educating and community-building, Ali enjoys playing board games and sampling local beers with her partner and two cats, Hawk and Callie, in Worcester, MA.
